predictions!
01.22.05 (9:38 pm)   [edit]
Who's it gonna be?
After sunday, the whole world will know the superbowl contestants. That's why I'm writing this. I will tell you ahead of time who will win the conference championships. Now, this is not my profession, however, having been a fan for 30+ years, I feel somewhat qualified to make my predictions.
Let's look at the AFC first. The Patriots vs. the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Steelers led the league in defense as well as in rushing. Nine times out of ten, this would be the perfect formula for a superbowl champ. But there are two variables in the equation that demand some scrutiny. One- the Steelers have a rookie QB, and two- the Patriots have coach Bellechek.
The last rookie to take his team to the superbowl was the Pats QB Tom Brady. And before him it was Dan Marino in 1983. Now, I know that the media has likened Roethlisberger to Marino in his poise and mechanics, but remember, Marino had Duper and Clayton. The Steelers don't have that caliber of receiver and haven't since Stallworth and Swan.
And don't forget coach Bellechek. He is the one that took Brady to the show and he and Brady are still a team. Bellechek's system is renown for interchangable personel. Example- Troy Brown switching from WR to DB when needed.
The Pats lost to Pittsburgh earlier this season, and you can bet that won't happen again. The Steelers will try to lean on the run to pound out a victory. The Pats will stop the run and force the rookie QB to beat them.
One last thing... The Pats have the best "bad weather kicker" in the NFL. Adam Vinatieri could very well be the "X Factor" in this game.
OK, let's switch to the NFC.
There is no doubt that mike Vick is a very dangerous and exciting player, but football is still a team sport! Marty Shotenhiemer was assembling a very decent team before he was fired, and coach Mora has done a pretty good job of using Marty's talent. But, they aren't quite there yet. Oh, they are exciting, and their D is pretty impressive at times, but the Eagles are a much more rounded team. They have a great defense and a reliable offense. Mr. McNabb and friends will prevail. And with two weeks until the show, maybe we'll see Owens come back from injury. The guy is a jerk, but he is very talented.
So let's sum it up. I predict the Pats to win 27-20, and I predict the Eagles to win 34-17.
If you have any disposable income, place your bets accordingly. I will blog again on monday and face the music, right or wrong.
Until next time, see ya.
