I'm right.
01.24.05 (7:17 am)   [edit]

Well, I hate to say "I told you so" but, "I told you so"!

I hope some of you won a couple bets, as I did. OK, I was off a little on the scoring, but only one touchdown each on the NFC game. I predicted 34-17, but they finished 27-10.

OK, I thought the AFC would be a one touchdown game, but it turned out to be two. What can I say, the Pats defense got the extra score. The games both went like I figured. Now we get to enjoy two weeks of superbowl hype.

And for you history buffs, I had a couple of my facts wrong in my last blog. Brady was not a rookie when he went to his first superbowl. But hey, my research team is off for a few weeks. Sometimes I'm just slinging it from the hip. Until next time, see ya.

predictions!
01.22.05 (9:38 pm)   [edit]
Who's it gonna be?
After sunday, the whole world will know the superbowl contestants. That's why I'm writing this. I will tell you ahead of time who will win the conference championships. Now, this is not my profession, however, having been a fan for 30+ years, I feel somewhat qualified to make my predictions.
Let's look at the AFC first. The Patriots vs. the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Steelers led the league in defense as well as in rushing. Nine times out of ten, this would be the perfect formula for a superbowl champ. But there are two variables in the equation that demand some scrutiny. One- the Steelers have a rookie QB, and two- the Patriots have coach Bellechek.
The last rookie to take his team to the superbowl was the Pats QB Tom Brady. And before him it was Dan Marino in 1983. Now, I know that the media has likened Roethlisberger to Marino in his poise and mechanics, but remember, Marino had Duper and Clayton. The Steelers don't have that caliber of receiver and haven't since Stallworth and Swan.
And don't forget coach Bellechek. He is the one that took Brady to the show and he and Brady are still a team. Bellechek's system is renown for interchangable personel. Example- Troy Brown switching from WR to DB when needed.
The Pats lost to Pittsburgh earlier this season, and you can bet that won't happen again. The Steelers will try to lean on the run to pound out a victory. The Pats will stop the run and force the rookie QB to beat them.
One last thing... The Pats have the best "bad weather kicker" in the NFL. Adam Vinatieri could very well be the "X Factor" in this game.
OK, let's switch to the NFC.
There is no doubt that mike Vick is a very dangerous and exciting player, but football is still a team sport! Marty Shotenhiemer was assembling a very decent team before he was fired, and coach Mora has done a pretty good job of using Marty's talent. But, they aren't quite there yet. Oh, they are exciting, and their D is pretty impressive at times, but the Eagles are a much more rounded team. They have a great defense and a reliable offense. Mr. McNabb and friends will prevail. And with two weeks until the show, maybe we'll see Owens come back from injury. The guy is a jerk, but he is very talented.
So let's sum it up. I predict the Pats to win 27-20, and I predict the Eagles to win 34-17.
If you have any disposable income, place your bets accordingly. I will blog again on monday and face the music, right or wrong.
Until next time, see ya.

Buried Story
01.20.05 (1:48 pm)   [edit]

While reading the local liberal rag I came acrossed an interesting story, buried in the back pages below the fold. The Louisiana State Supreme Court unanimously reinstated the anti-gay marriage amendment that was approved by almost 70% of the voters last september.

The state district court had struck down the amendment stating it violated a provision in the state constitution. The lawsuit contended that the amendment covered more than one subject, which is illegal by the state constitution. The State Supreme Court said "no, it does not cover more than one subject. Therefore, we overrule the lower court and rule the amendment valid". Basically, they upheld what 70% of the voters want implemented. And it was unanimous!

Isn't it great when the judicial arm actually supports the voters wishes? I mean it happens so rarely. My hat's off to the voters of Louisiana and their Supreme Court Justices. They said loud and clear if you want to marry someone of the same sex, hey, move to John Kerry's state!

Or if you give it enough time, maybe Barbara Boxer's state will eventually allow it. But not as long as Arnold's in charge!

Until next time, see ya.

Kerry's a Quack!
01.19.05 (9:32 am)   [edit]

Isn't it interesting how John Kerry and Barbara Boxer (both extreme liberals) both accused Dr. Rive of being rigid and following the party line. Then they both did the very thing they accused her of doing by remaining rigid and voting their party line. Now I don't blame them for doing that, I myself am fairly rigid and would probably vote the party line (at least in this case). But their comments and actions are the equivalent of the pot calling the kettle black.

You almost expect that from Sen. Kerry. Based on recent comments he has made publicly, he is still bitter from losing the election. He has publicly commented on how the election was tainted. He also accused municipal officials of forcing democrats to wait for hours in long election lines, thus discouraging their participation. More on that later.

Kerry is well known for flip-flopping on issues. But these recent public attacks coupled with his bitter questioning of Dr. Rice have left me wondering just how effective he will be as a Senator from this point forward. Of course there are those that question how effective he has EVER been during his tenure. I won't go there, as I have not studied his Senatorial record.

I've seen many media sources liken him to a fish because of his flip-flopping, but I think he's more of a quack.

Until next time, see ya.

The Next King???
01.17.05 (5:10 pm)   [edit]

Well, today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King. It's a national holiday to some of us and just another day to others. The man never held a political office like Senator, Congressman or President, yet is considered by many to have brought about more change than any politician in the last forty years. I respect him and what he stood for.

My question is this...who is carrying his torch? Who else in this nation "has a dream"? Since he has died, I have not seen anyone pick up where he left off. There are a few celebraties that have sqeaked a little, but nobody has carried on his roar. Certainly racism and breaches in civil rights still exist. Did Dr. King solve these problems prior to leaving us? Black people were quick to follow a strong leader like King, but who is the leader now?

Don't talk to me about Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. They are so immoral that Dr. King would probably roll over in his grave. Just goes to show that ANYONE can wear the title "reverend" if Mr. Jackson can.

Alan Keyes is a moral man. I'm afraid that noone can really relate to him. Especially since he is a Republican. How about Mr. Cosby? He has caused a stir of late, but I'm afraid he is just too old. I think that blacks think of him more like "that's just old honory Bill, try to ignore him".

Maybe the new Senator, Obama I think his name is, could be the guy. He certainly excited the Democratic Convention. But now that he is a Senator, he is in "the Club". Either he can use his new power to continue the cause, or he will be careful not to piss anybody off. My bet is the latter.

Maybe you think that things are so much better than in King's day, that the cause is dead. Maybe the problems now are more international and multi-cultural. Have we come together enough that a King replacement is no longer neccessary? I can't really answer that. But, todays black youth (all youth for that matter) really have no good public roll models. So if they come from a single parent family, the odds really begin to stack against them. Where am I going with this? I merely want to stimulate some thought. I don't claim to have the answers. But certainly, nobody seems to be asking the questions. All I see is parades and celebrations for Dr. King, and that's great! But who is going to step up now???

Until next time, see ya

Lay Off Moss!
01.16.05 (8:56 am)   [edit]
I am not condoning Randy Moss's actions regarding the mooning incident, he is a jerk and everyone knows it (including his teammates), however, this was bungled at the league level as usual. Let's face it, the fine levied on Moss was merely an answer to the outcry from the media. Think about it. There was no penalty over his actions. I believe that a flag for taunting could have and should have been thrown, but it wasn't! As a matter of fact, Brett Favre should have been flagged for punching earlier in the game, but wasn't.

Somebody tell me the difference between Moss' actions and when some guys used to slide their hand across their neck, simulating slashing the neck. The league outlawed that practice. Or what about the "white shoes dance" or the "ickey shuffle" or the "dirty birds dance"? Athletes keep coming up with something new, and the league has to handle it. The main difference in the older displays of jubilation is just that! They were celebratory, not "in your face" disrespectful.

I just want the NFL to do their jobs and not buckle to any media. Football is still a team sport. The best sport in the world. It doesn't matter how great Moss thinks he is, he still needs a QB to get the ball to him, who in turn needs a line to protect him, etc..
If faking dropping your drawers is taunting, then throw the flag!!! That's what they are for. Don't cave to the media, the same media who shamelessly replays the incident over and over.

As for Moss, He's and idiot. Another uneducated punk who, if not for physical God given talent, would be in prison today. I had hoped that playing a couple seasons with a Hall of Fame reciever would have helped him mature, but it doesn't seem to be the case. These type of players have taken over the NBA, are starting to take over MLB, and if the league isn't careful, will invade the best sport of all. The commisioner as well as the owners need to get tough now or soon it will be too late.

Meanwhile, lay off Randy for the mooning. If it's a foul, THROW THE FLAG!!!!
Until next time,
See ya.

Vik or Pack?
01.02.05 (5:49 pm)   [edit]

Well that's a new one on me. A viking fan cheering for the Packers?

Remember, they are playing each other next week.

But I must say that Mike Tice should have taken the Washington job! If he keeps his job, the first thing he should do is trade Randy Moss!

Please, sign a player who cares about the team and organization. Don't let the NFL fall prey to the same assholes who now play in the NBA. It will be the demise of the league, just like it is for hoops. I personally won't watch an NBA game, period. I can see those kind of individuals on the street corner if I want.

Might I add?
01.02.05 (5:27 pm)   [edit]

Might I add that the Oregon State Beavers are 2-0 in the Pac-10.

I know that the Huskies are the media favorite, but hey, Lucas is back and the Beavs are on a roll!

They haven't started 2-0 since 1993!

I am more impressed with their football team. No other PAC-10 team played four top ten (asssoc. press) teams during the year. Alhough they lost all four games, they were in every one. They lost to LSU in OT, lost to USC by one touchdown, Boise State by two scores, and Cal by one touch. Even though Steven Jackson went pro early (St. Louis Rams).

They had six players all conference. Watch for at least three of them in the pro draft.

But they beat all of the northwest teams, UofO, UofW, and WSU. First time since 1964. Go Beavs!

NFL and NFFL
01.02.05 (3:19 pm)   [edit]
Hey all, It's been awhile. December is always a crazy month, and this one was no different. I hope Santa remembered everybody. That is, everyone who were good this year. Well, it's playoff time for both the NFL and the NFFL. The Cliffhangers were victims of teams resting their players. In a final game against the #2 team in the league, Manning, James and Gates were all rested in their final game, resulting in a loss for the Cliffhangers. Thus, Keggies Frat Boys took first in the league by a half game. What a way to finish a season. I led the son of a gun all year, only to fade in the last two weeks. Second place money just don't seem right! I see the Seahawks squeaked out a division title. I suppose that it will be viewed as a successfull season for Holmgren. At least by the media. But I say that's bunk! Holmgren's sixth year resulted in another ho-hum team. I realise that the players have to be accountable as well, but please. Mental breakdowns all season and subpar special teams and defense will ensure that their playoff birth will end quickly. They have the Rams at home, and I don't expect them to win it. The team lacks any true veteran leadership. Now, that's not the coaches fault, but poor defense and special teams are. The media hasn't mentioned the special teams, but please. The Falcons returned every kickoff beyond their own 30 yard line. And although I admire Maurice Morris, he should not be returning kickoffs. I'd be embarrased to be a division champ and only have a 9-7 record. Green Bay is in the same boat, but they should be embarresed as well. If you can't win ten games, you should'nt be in the playoffs. That's my opinion. Until next time, see ya. Bomber
