All the news channels are a buzz with the story of Ron Artest, the idiot who ran into the crowd and punched several fans. I guess it took place on friday night in a game against the Pistons. I am disapponted but not surprised over his behavior and that of his teammates. I thought the suspensions handed out by Mr Stern were fair, especially when you factor in the civil suits these guys will face.
I've seen this sort of thing brewing for some time. The NBA needs to take a look in the mirror. The NBA owners need to weigh moral conduct into these outrageous players salaries. No, I'm not ignoring the players. They are predominately decent kids who are making a wonderful living playing a game. But the element of gangs and thugs has finally gotten a foot hold in this league, and if actions aren't taken soon, they will destroy the league. The players union would add a great deal of respect back into the game if it policed itself more. If they stopped resisting mandatory drug tests. If they developed their own moral code of ethics that they made all players sign. If they implemented a mnimum age requirement (like the NFL). There are several ways they could put forward good will for the sport and regain the respect of the fans. I don't condone any fan throwing water, beer, coins or anything on the floor or at the players. And certainly those fans should be investigated as well. But the fans have lost all respect for these NBA punks. You never saw fans throw things at Dr. J. Whether you liked him or not, you still respected him.
Now Ron and his pals have some time to reflect. But somehow I think they probably feel picked on. Probably tell you it's 'cause they're black. Well, I watched the replays on a color tv and then again on my old black and white just to be sure, and sure enough, all the players involved were indeed black. I can promise you that if it were a white player punching a 5'6" black fan, the news media would have a field day. What I find kinda funny (if any of this could be funny) is that Artest freaked at a fan that he outweighed by 100lbs and was a foot taller, but when he was shoved by Ben Wallace, he just walked away. Some say he kept his cool. I say he's a puss! If he's so bad, why didn't he take on Mr Wallace? He knew Ben would clean his clock. But one look at a small white guy in the stands and he shot right after him. OK enough of the Punks.
How about that civil war? The Oregon State Beavers tagged the Ducks for 50 pts.! I believe the final was 50-21. It was possibly the best total game of the year by the Beavers. They dominated on offense, defense, and special teams (and their cheerleaders are better looking). Finally, everybody came to play. Remember, if you win just one game a year, it had best be the civil war. The win also marked the first season since 1974 that the Beavs beat Oregon, Washington, and Washington State in the same year. That's right, The Beavers are the Northwest Champs!
I know they will only finish fourth in the PAC-10, but that's better than the other three teams I just mentioned. Remember, they lost to LSU in OT, and they played USC tough (even lead at halftime). And lost to Cal in the last minutes of the game. That's three top ten ranked teams that they had to play this year. No other Pac-10 team had to do that. And I think that's great! The better the competition, the better the Beavs will be. Next year is looking up. We just have to come up with guys to replace Bill Swancutt and Derek Anderson (two guys you'll see in the NFL next year).
The Cliffhangers are 10 and 1 so far!!!
Until next time, see ya.
