| Just Another Quake |
| 09.12.07 (8:08 am) [edit] |
Yesterday we had an earthquake that shook my house here in Anchorage. On the anneversary of the Sept 11 attacks, Anchorage shook briefly to a 4.4 quake at around 3:30 in the afternoon. I heard the epicenter was approx. 60 miles NW of town, and 60 miles deep in the ground. I wonder if there is a faultline there? Alaska is so big that we have several earthquakes everyday somewhere in our state. But, quakes that shake the major cities are far less frequent. There was no sunami danger from this last quake. " />I don't know how the iron butts do it. Some of them travel 1000 miles on their motorcycles in a day! They definitely must have a more comfortable ride than me. Plus, they must be independently wealthy to be able to be gone so much. Last week, a friend and I rode our bikes from Glennallen, Alaska to Tok, Alaska and back. It is about 280 miles round trip. From there, I continued on my own back to Anchorage, approx. another 185 miles. Giving me a total of 465 miles in a day. My longest ride to date, since owning my '05 V-Star. The weather was beautiful all day until the last hour of my ride. From Palmer to Anchorage it rained fairly steady. Plus, I ran out of gas a couple miles shy of Sutton, Alaska. I switched to reserve and continued on, not knowing how far it would take me. Luckily, the gas station was only about five miles up the road. It was the best ride of the summer (so far), and the bike ran great. I would certainly do that run again. Later

| Opponents? |
| 07.30.07 (11:48 am) [edit] |
In an attempt to stir some debate, I submitted an earlier blog to the The Voice of the Times, voicing my support for the Death Penalty. And I'd like to thank the 'The Voice' for posting my letter. So far, nobody has answered my letter with an opposing view. That's not to say that the opposition isn't out there. I found the website www.aadp.info which is the Alaskans Against the Death Penalty. I never heard of this organization prior to my blog. I stumbled across them in the Anchorage Daily Newspaper, in an obscure article about them having a fund raiser. Their actual existence has prompted me to start a rival organization I could call AAIM (Alaskans Against Incarcerating Murderers). Prompted me? Yes, but not enough to actually follow through on it. I don't have the time it would take to actually form a non-profit. I struggle to understand the mentality of someone who belongs to things like this. What motivates these folks? Why are people so against justice? Speaking for myself only, I say that if one of my family is murdered, I want the Death Penalty imposed on the perpetrator. They suggest that the trials and appeals for death row inmates delays the healing process that the victim's families need. For me, the healing would not begin until justice was served. An eye for an eye justice. Besides, limit the appeals if need be. I will agree that the Death Penalty should be carefully imposed, but what about the obvious occurrences? The guy who shot up the college recently. The serial killer who has multiple victims. The gang member who did the drive by shooting. These are usually obvious offenders who should have no rights ( in my opinion) beyond the victims rights. To that list I would add terrorists, child rapists, and anyone guilty of violent acts once incarcerated. Look, with me it's the ultimate punishment for what I view as the ultimate crime. The two political parties continue their hypocrisy on the matter, the Republicans are generally for the death penalty and oppose abortion; while the Dems are against the death penalty, but ok with abortion. I welcome debate on the subject. Later.

| Is Young Dirty? |
| 07.25.07 (9:20 am) [edit] |
When does an innocent man spend a quarter million dollars on lawyer's fees? That is the amount being reported that Congressman Don Young has spent over the past couple of months. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Congressman is indeed involved in an FBI investigation. The report says the investigation has to do with campaign contributions by VECO and its executives who have already admitted to bribing State level politicians in our State of Alaska. Personally, I can't say if he is guilty of any wrong doing. But, again I ask why anyone would spend that kind of mula if thay had nothing to hide? I also can't understand why a politician would even participate in questionable practices given the likelihood of their being caught. The FBI is busting people left and right. Are these so called leaders so cocky that they believe they are beyond approach? Do they feel they are so smart that they would never be caught? The Republican Party in general, and the Alaska "big three" specifically have got me seriously re-thinking my allegiance to the Party. It is awful hard to remain a Republican in recent years. I'm seriously considering changing affiliations to be 'Non-Declared'. I need to research it further, but I'm sick of these "good old boy" assholes pretending to be moral and trusting conservatives. The one shining light (so far) appears to be our new Governor, Sarah Palin. She continuously shows the public that she is not part of the "good old boy" network. She pretty much thumbed her nose at them during her campaign for office, and hung her hat on returning morals to the office, and state politics in general. And, of course, the voters overwhelmingly supported her. To this day she has the most favorable rating among voters of all fifty states. Back to Young. Mr. Young, why don't you make it easy on everyone and just retire? Retire today and let our fair Governor announce your replacement. Save yourself the embarrassment of the investigation as well as some money and just walk away. And good riddance! Later.

| Kashwitna River |
| 07.23.07 (9:17 am) [edit] |
|
Saturday was beautiful! I suppose it topped out at 74 or 75 degrees. I jumped at the chance to take a ride. I hopped on the old V-Star and headed north. It took a good twenty minutes longer than usual to get to Wasilla, on account of road construction. But once I inched past the workers the lanes opened back up and I averaged 65 to 70 mph after that. I stopped by a friend's house in Wasilla to see what's up, but no one was home. So, on to Willow. The bike was running great, and so far it was a pleasurable ride. As I left Willow the traffic really lightened up and I was able to check out the scenery as I rode. By now, I had been on the bike for about 90 minutes, and thanks to the road construction, I was passing mile maker 75. That's not very good time. I had planned on riding to Talkeetna (approx. 95 miles) but the hind side was starting to bother me. Soon I was passing mile markers in the eighties and was looking for a place to rest. The Kashwitna River crosses under the Parks Highway around marker 83. There is a nice pull out right beside it, so I parked the bike. It felt good to stretch and walk around. I definitely need some highway bars. My knees get locked up riding too long on the stock foot pegs. After a good 15 minutes standing upright I had to decide which way to go. I really wanted to continue, but to do that I would have needed some pain killer (which I failed to bring). I decided that by the time I got home it would be about as much as I could take. So I headed back home. When I parked it in the garage, I had been gone 3 and a half hours. For an old guy like me, 3 and a half hours on the bike was pretty good. It's a far cry from touring several hundred miles per day like I want. But to do that, I definitely need some modifications. I need a better than stock seat and some highway bars to stretch the legs. This week I may take off to Glennallen and from there, on to Tok. That would be approx. 640 mile round trip. If I do it, I'll do an overnighter and try to split those miles up some. And I'll be sure to remember the ibuprofin. We have gotten about 3/4 inch of rain since saturday, so it's a good thing I got out when I did. But, the next few days are supposed to be sunny again. And I've got the itch to go. Later

| Young Must Go |
| 07.15.07 (10:18 am) [edit] |
|
You don’t have to remind me that Alaska only has about 670,000 citizens. That’s not much in the grand scheme of national politics. Because of that low number, we only have one Representative in the House, his name is Don Young. He is a Republican from Fairbanks and has held his seat for decades. But, I for one am ready for a change. Mr. Young reaffirmed my feelings by not participating in the most recent House vote pertaining to the war in Iraq. According to the ADN (Anchorage Daily Newspaper), Mr. Young did not cast a vote on whether to drastically change strategies in Iraq. The House tally was 223-201 in favor of changing courses, troop withdrawals starting in four months, and a complete change of mission by next year. All these against the President’s wishes. I don’t know why Mr. Young chose not to vote. Perhaps he was out of town. Maybe something came up that could not wait until one of the four months per year that Congress does not convene. Perhaps he was ill. Perhaps he didn’t see the need to vote, given that his vote would have been in the minority, and not made much difference. Whatever the case, I feel he is derelict of his duties on such an important issue. Not only did he blow off his constituents in Alaska, he also sent a bad message to the troops that they are unimportant. Mr. Young’s voting record (or lack of voting record) has been a topic of debate in the past. He defends it by saying that some of the votes are not necessary and a waste of his precious time. I submit that voting in Congress is exactly what he is sent to Washington DC to do. His job is to represent us back in the state by voting for us. I am not interested in his little news sound bites, or pictures of all his Alaskan paraphernalia in his office, or even what lopsided federal spending he brings to our state. No, I am interested in his voting record. It is a barometer of his representation of us. And quite frankly, it sucks. His non-participation actually emboldens these left leaning idiots like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed. Look, I realize that many Alaskans are fed up with this so called war. And whether you support a change of course or not doesn’t really matter in this case. No, what matters to me is that our representative, the one we voted into office, the one we sent to DC on our behalf, actually shows up and participates in the process. You know, earns his freakin’ pay. Lets all start now in finding his replacement. And don’t talk to me about idiots like Ethan Berkowitz. Let’s find a good replacement who can actually remember why he was sent to DC. Later

| Alaska Needs the Death Penalty |
| 07.07.07 (7:40 am) [edit] |
|
I’ve often wondered why such a conservative state as Alaska does not institute the death penalty. I have concluded that perhaps it is too expensive (in its current form) for a state of less than 700,000 people. Maybe it is with all the appeals and years of imprisonment, not to mention ensuring the act itself is humane. Where others seem to stumble is on the deterrent factor. I say who cares about the deterrent factor? It is called the “death penalty”, not the “crime deterrent”. Besides, there are now studies out that show it does have a deterrent factor. And with each execution, an estimated 18 lives are saved. How’s that for cost verses benefit? Others argue that too many innocent people are executed each year. I don’t believe that to be true. With modern science and the abundance of lawyers, I can’t believe a truly innocent man can’t prove his case. Besides, he is innocent until proven guilty by the state. I truly think that Alaska needs the death penalty voted into law before a terroristic attack happens here like in Scotland. Then, if it were to happen here, we could at least execute the criminals and set an example to others who are entertaining such acts. What deterrent does the death penalty have to suicide bombers who are paying the ultimate price? Maybe none. But remember it is called the death penalty, not deterrent. Besides, when they make a mistake and the bomb does not go off, they sure run to save their hide. Once capital punishment is instituted, there should be no age limit. Anyone who maliciously takes another life should face the ultimate sentence, regardless if they are 41 or 14. Then some of these idiot gang members may actually think twice before shooting a person wearing a red shirt. To be clear, if one of my family ever fell victim to one of these punks, they may be unable to avoid a death penalty. Even after serving the state imposed sentence. I'm speaking hypothetically of course. I don't want to sound as if I condone vigilantism. It is definitely time for Alaska to institute capital punishment, and I implore our legislators to implement this sentence as another tool for our DA’s. We could probably contract out to another state for the actual deed like we do for prison sentences. It is just a matter of time before our ports, airports, or gas line becomes the target of extremists. Let’s put the penalty in place now. Later

| Sen. Clinton Throws Rocks From Her Glass House |
| 07.06.07 (10:22 am) [edit] |
" />
The Senator from New York is at it again. Spewing out remarks that make her look like an idiot. The recent criticisms of the President are laughable coming from the wife of a former President who pardoned over a hundred crooks on his last day of office. Scooter Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction, and while the President forgave his prison sentence, he did not actually pardon the convictions. Meanwhile, former President Clinton "fully pardoned" crooks, thieves and drug dealers. You can check out the list for yourself. In fact, they don't even list the offenses for Marc Rich. Mrs. Clinton is so shallow, I can only laugh when I hear her speak. She changes from southern belle to corporate lawyer to modern woman, depending on who she is speaking to. Normally that would be a positive talent for a politician. But she just can't pull it off. Certainly not like her husband could. Bill Clinton was a very accomplished public speaker who could always connect with the listener no matter who it was. Hillary, on the other hand, seems more patronizing than sincere, and she can't seem to fix it. All that aside, some comments are just plain stupid. And to criticize Pres. Bush in that way after her husband's incredibly long list of pardons is just plain ridiculous. Senator Clinton is the poster child of my belief that women should stay out of politics. Later

| Birthdays are Overated |
| 06.28.07 (7:15 am) [edit] |
|
I took this week off. No special reason, just had a lot going on. I got my trucked serviced, picked up two different daughters from the airport, and have another home game for the Alaska Wild. Sandwiched in there somewhere was my birthday.
I was gonna go camping with my son, but he ended up getting a summer job and started this week. Oh well, it rained over a half an inch the day we were gonna go.
My daughters baked a cake, but I told them "no candles", I didn't want a campfire.
So the week is almost over and all I've got to show for it is some of my chores are done. My yard is looking pretty good. My kids have been getting shuffled around to various jobs, and my truck is serviced.
It finally warmed up (and dried up) to seventy degrees yesterday. So since noone else was around, I took off on a nice motorcycle ride. Only about seventy miles, but without any painkillers it was enough.
Motorcycling is still my favorite hobby, even though I don't seem to get to go that often. Something always seems to come up.
Yeah, another year come and gone. Maybe next summer I'll ride my bike down the Alcan. That is if something else doesn't come up.

| Bong Hits for Jesus Ruling |
| 06.26.07 (9:26 am) [edit] |
|
The Supreme Court finally issued its ruling on this freedom of speech case. I must admit that even I am surprised at their decision. Let’s break it down. First, the Justices decided that the parade was indeed a school sanctioned event. The students were let out of school to witness the parade. This decision is questionable to me. Second, though it was vague, the Justices ruled that the banner could be interpreted as promoting drug use. I tend to agree with this portion of the ruling. Even though the kid said that was not his intent, the Justices saw through his lies. Third, the Court reversed the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal’s (again) decision that the principal could be held personably liable in her actions. This is one portion of the decision that I whole heartedly agree with. You just can’t have public officials running scared when they enforce policy, worried about being personally sued. Their job is to enforce the policies handed down by the school board. If they stray from the policy then it’s another issue. But clearly in this case the woman did nothing wrong. Fourth, and finally, the Court basically said that as a student, you check some (not all) of your freedoms at the school house door in terms of the administration’s ability to maintain order and a constructive learning environment. Again, I don’t have a problem with this either.
My first knee jerk reaction to this case was to toss the brat out on his ear. He clearly misrepresented himself in front of the courts as to his original intentions. This was merely a stunt to shock people with a stupid banner that got turned into a freedom of speech case once the ACLU got a hold of it. So in that regard, I’m glad the Court slapped the ACLU on its wrists. But I am still leaning toward the kid and the ACLU on the issue of where it occurred. He was clearly not on school property, and not under school supervision (in my opinion). So I’m still a little on the fence in this situation. But, I support the Court’s decision and thought they explained it well.
To me, the real importance of this case was two fold. One is to support a public employee who was simply enforcing public policy. And two was to send a message to punks like him that, yeah, you have freedom of speech, but even that is taken too far when it promotes drug use during a school activity.
A tough issue that I think was fairly resolved. And once again, the 9nth Circuit got slapped around! Hahahahaha.

| Still Waiting on Decision |
| 06.07.07 (9:32 am) [edit] |
|
We are still waiting on the Supreme Court decision on the "bong hits for Jesus" case. As you remember, the plaintiff contends his free speech right was impeded. The kid had hung a banner that said "bong hits for Jesus" during a parade of the Olympic torch through the town of Juneau. He was then disciplined by the high school principle and suspended.
The boy and his father appealed the suspension but the principle was backed up by first the superintendent, then the City Counsel, and finally the District Court. The 9nth Circuit Court of Appeals then overturned the decision and here we are.
I wrote and spoke out against the kid and railed him for changing his motive for the banner. I believe that once the lawyers got involved, his story changed to his wanting to test the boundries of his free speech. I garrauntee that his original intentions had NOTHING to do with free speech, and had everything to do with trying to drop jaws and raise eyebrows.
Now as I've had time to digest the news stories and cool off from my anger against this weasel, I have to admit that I'm doing an about face on this case. Much as I dislike the boy and his father, I have to side with them in terms of the wrongful suspension. I do not support, however, the monetary claim part of their suit. And I especially don't support any monetary damage against the principle, which is what they are seeking. She was doing her job and making decisions she believed to be in the best interest of the school and the public. Decisions that I might remind you were supported all the way up to the District Judge.
But the seeking of monetary damages is right on par with these two morons who actually now live in China. "Hey assholes, let's see you hang a banner like that in Hong Kong and cry about your rights!"
When the verdict is announced I hope that it supports the right of free speech, but does not award a single penny to these two crooks. That would be justice.

| Bye, Bye Left Wingers |
| 05.30.07 (9:31 am) [edit] |
|
What a coincidence that several left wing nuts have faded from the limelight. Rosie O’Donnell has quit The View, Cindy Sheehan has gone back to California, and even Sen. Harry Reid has voted to fund the war.
Among the three, Rosie by far is the worst, and genuinely seems to hate our country. She has spewed hatred and lies through any forum given her. On The View, she had a big riff with her conservative counterpart that finally came to a head and was cause for her quitting the show. She also has a website where she bashes almost anyone who disagrees with her. I say good riddance. Move to France if you hate America.
Cindy Sheehan is a woman with a legitimate beef. She lost a child in the war. I sympathize with her and her x-husband. But she carried her cause too far. Protesting the war is anyone’s right. Becoming the spokesman for the far left nuts at the expense of your 27 year marriage is carrying things too far.
Finally, there is Senator Harry Reid of Nevada. Actually, a person could include Nancy Pelosi in this case. Both staunch opponents of the war. That’s fine, that’s everyone’s right. I’m sure that they have many constituents who support their view. So, why sell out on your convictions? They both voted for additional funding of the war, a war they oppose, simply because the Democrats got some of their pet projects funded in the same bill.
They have basically said to their base “we oppose the war, but as long as they give us what we want, we’ll go along”.
Pelosi once said there was new leadership in place. Ha, you call that leadership?
Looks like the conservative nation is outlasting these left wing idiots.
Thank God (boy they wouldn’t like that either).

| Trans Fats Good or Bad? |
| 05.16.07 (1:02 pm) [edit] |
|
Just read this article from Reuters news:
"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A nutrition advocacy group sued Burger King Holdings Inc. on Wednesday over the hamburger chain's use of frying oil that contains artery-clogging trans fats.
In court papers filed in Washington, D.C. superior court, the Center for Science in the Public Interest said Burger King is the only leading restaurant chain that has not yet committed to eliminating trans fats from its menu."
The article goes on, but you get the drift.
I hope Burger King counter sues those assholes at CSPI for millions for bringing such a frivolous lawsuit. Is this not America? Do we not embrace capitalism?
If those dumb asses at CSPI want to do some good, they should get the State laws of CA changed to not allow the trans fats. But to bring on such a ridiculous lawsuit and waste EVERYONE's time, they should have to pay!
What's next? A lawsuit against Walmart for selling cigarettes? How about a suit against the State of CA for not posting warning signs at every crosswalk stating that crossing a street can be hazardous?
Who the hell finances these idiots anyway? The French? I'm not convinced that trans fats are really a health hazard. Sure if that is all you eat, but if all you ate was tofu, it'd probably kill you as well.
Here's a novel idea...how about letting the consumers make the choice?
Oh no, bad idea. We consumers are not capable of making our own decisions! Silly me.
Again I say counter sue the numb skulls!
I like my spotted owls fried in trans fat oils!

| Seattle Gays, Not So Proud! |
| 04.24.07 (7:43 am) [edit] |
|
Supporters of Seattle’s Out and Proud Parade got caught with their pants down (so to speak) when they received a bill from the city for $102,000 for last year’s parade. The annual parade celebrating the gay lifestyle has been held every June since 1975 and features events like ‘dykes on bikes’. This year’s parade is in danger of being cancelled do mainly to debt.
Organizers claim last year’s parade was attended by over 200,000 people. That’s what I find amusing about the whole story. If over 200,000 fags attend this years parade and each contribute one dollar they would make enough money to pay the past due and this year’s bill. Wouldn’t it be worth one U.S. dollar for the right to parade down city streets, half dressed, and groping your same sex friends? You would think so. But hey, why pay a cent when you can force the city to contribute to “save” the event which ultimately computes to tax payers shouldering the bill. Remember, if we don’t bail them out we will be called bigots and be accused of being homophobic.
Personally, I’d pay a lot more than one U.S. dollar to ban the fags from parading, but I’m ‘old school’.
So to break it all down, fags in Seattle are not proud enough of their gayness to support their own frickin’ parade. Why does that NOT surprise me?
Taxpayers of Seattle stand strong, and DON’T bail out the fag parade. If they are so proud as to ‘come out’, make them pay for their own event. Tax dollars should not be spent on twisted behavior.

| Campout |
| 04.23.07 (9:10 am) [edit] |
|
It's finally not freezing at night and reaching almost fifty during the day, so me and some buddies went on an early season camping trip. The campgrounds aren't officially open until May 1, so we weren't charged anything. We found a site at Hidden Lake campground that was free of snow and set up camp.
The lake is still frozen, but the ice looks pretty thin. It will probably open up in a week or so. We didn't bother fishing since none of us had a license yet. But we did spend the evening around the fire tipping back some Jack Daniels shots and solving the world's problems.
Like imigration. Hey, let's let them come to work, but they must become legal citizens to receive any government benefits. And any felony conviction wins them jailtime followed by expulsion.
No alien could legally buy a firearm.
No Muslims, no questions.
No more student visas. Let them study in their own country, or apply for citizenship.
I don't recall the other stipulations. I think I must have dozed off early.
We did see a black bear and a couple eagles, but no moose.
All in all a fun early season campout. But now it's back to work. Damn.

| Motorcycle Season in Alaska |
| 04.14.07 (2:22 pm) [edit] |
|
When I stepped out for the paper this morning the streets were dry, the temp was about 38 degrees and the clouds were threatening. I thought to myself that this is the day to break out the V-Star for a ’07 maiden run. I needed to hurry through my chores and fire the old bike up before those clouds decided otherwise.
I breezed through the headlines while sipping my morning coffee. That’s enough; I can read the articles later.
Out to the garage where my daughters Toyota was waiting for me to change off the studded tires for the summer ones. I jacked up the front end and used my impact wrench to speed things up. Sorry to my neighbors, as I know the compressor noise isn’t exactly welcoming at 8:30 am on a Saturday morning. With that chore finished, she was off to work. Good, I got the whole garage to myself.
After taking the dust cover off, I wheeled it over to the garage door and aimed the pipes outward. I raised the garage door, and with a ¾ choke the V-Star fired right up. Nice. You gotta love the sound of a v-twin warming up. While she was idling, I threw the tire gauge on the front and back tires. Both were low, so I aired them up some with the compressor. A second check measured them to be just right. The oil was good (checked it before I warmed it up) and the brake reservoirs were full. I checked the brake and clutch linkages and adjusted the mirrors. The V-Star was begging me for a run.
I put my helmet on and a pair of pliers in my pocket (in case I needed to adjust the clutch before I got back) then pulled on my riding gloves. Here we go.
I eased it out the garage and onto the street. Boy she was running sweet. Once I reached the main roads I opened her up a bit. Yes, pulling strong and running smooth. No clutch adjustments were necessary. I only ran it on about an eight mile loop back to the garage. A test run so to speak, just checking all the bells and whistles. Everything was perfect, just as I had left it last October.
What a great feeling to finally have it back on the road. And my timing was great, as soon as I pulled her back into the garage it started raining outside. Well, that’s enough for today. She’s back on the road and all systems are go. Now I just need Mother Nature to cooperate a bit and give me some sunshine.
Whoo hoo! Its motorcycle season again in Alaska!

| Whole Lotta Rosie! |
| 03.30.07 (8:34 pm) [edit] |
|
AC~DC sung about a gal named Rosie, a whole lotta Rosie, who was a whole lotta woman. I love that song. But now when I hear the name Rosie, the first thing that comes to mind is Rosie Odonnell. Probably because her "hate America" dribble is all over the media.
Now, I got nothing against her personally, nor have I ever met her. If she wants to hate America, that's her business. And if she wants to be with a woman, that's her business. Probably couldn't get a guy anyway. But somebody please get her off the freakin TV! There are too many mind numb daytime veiwers who she can sell her dribble to, and who will buy into it.
I can't understand why anyone watches her to start with. Let's face it, she is a fat , ugly, stupid, dike who relies on "shock value" ploys to compensate for her lack of talent. Still, women tune in. Let's see how many guys would tune into a show featuring a fat, stupid, ugly gay dude with no talent. Yeah, whatever!
I have never seen The Veiw, nor will I. But I do think that ABC needs to get this idiot off the air. They do have a right and even a reponsibility to air a variety of opinions, but this dike goes WAY overboard. To suggest that the islamic extremists are misunderstood is utter nonsense. To answer her comment "they are moms and dads too", I would point out the car bombing where the little children were used to pass a checkpoint then left to die. The adults didn't even have the guts to die with them.
She has several more quotes that are not only anti-American, but they are just plain wrong! I'm not going to repeat them here, I just have one plea to ABC.

| Has Spring Sprung? |
| 03.28.07 (8:50 am) [edit] |
|
It's been a long winter and I'm ready for spring. Yesterday the temperature in Anchorage finally hit the low thirties, 32 officially. But this morning it was back down to four degrees at my house. Actually seeing some water on the ground running from snowbanks was extremely encouraging. The custom motorcycle show was a couple weeks ago, but I didn't attend this year. The temp outside was like 12 degrees and I just couldn't get in the mood. But yesterday's sunshine and resulting melt off has got me thinking "cruising weather". Time to fire up the V-Star and go through my safety checks and adjustments. It wouldn't hurt to turn the hose to it as well. Even though I kept it covered the past several months, somehow the dust finds its way in.
A funny coincidence was that I received my seasonal motorcycle insurance bill yesterday as well. I guess that's a true sign that spring has sprung!
It's not unusual for Anchorage to get an occasional snowstorm in late March and early April, but I'm not gonna go there! Obviously the roads will take a couple weeks of mild temps before I'll venture out on two wheels, but I'm getting the itch real bad.
Nothing like a nice 200 mile cruise on a bright sunny day to take your mind off of politics, even if it's temporary.
Ride safe!

| Supreme Court Hears Case from Alaska |
| 03.20.07 (10:28 am) [edit] |
|
In some ways it’s almost an honor that the Supreme Court is hearing a case brought forth by Alaska. But the reality is that an idiot from Juneau got himself in some hot water and has forced the issue all the way to the top. More on the circumstances later. One thing that I find fascinating is the reason this case made it this far. And that is because of the far left, California biased, no clue to reality, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The 9nth (as I’ll refer to them) consistently strikes down lower court rulings, only to be face-slapped by the Supreme Court later on. The last eight cases that made it to the Supreme from the 9nth were reversed. The 9nth is also two years behind in their own court cases. The jurisdiction of the 9nth needs to be split up and a new Appeals Court assembled to handle the case load. Let the 9nth continue to hear California cases (California deserves them), but split off Alaska, Wash., Ore, Idaho, and Montana for a new Court.
Bills have been introduced before and are currently pending from Ted Stevens and others. But the California delegation refuses to sign on for fear of losing their strangle hold on the Court of Appeals. What better way for the ACLU and Californians to force their own agenda on the west than by controlling the 9nth? Let’s face it, Nancy Pelosi won’t give it up. And as long as the Dems control Congress we are stuck with the 9nth.
Back to the case. This kid Fredericks, then 18 years old thought he’d be funny and hang up a banner that read “bong hits for Jesus”. The venue was across the street from his high school and during a parade through town of the Olympic Torch. With news cameras present and members of the community lining the streets to watch the parade, this little punk unveils his banner looking for the desired effect, shock.
I’ve known idiots like him before. They are looking for attention and in doing so they also want to shock people into a knee jerk reaction. They think it’s cool when they get a reaction, any reaction. I don’t know if they were never breast fed, or maybe could never bond with their daddy, or perhaps they are just high and stupid. Whatever the excuse, the part that bothers me most is next.
So naturally, he gets in trouble, and he is disciplined by the Principle. Some kind of suspension, I’m not sure how long. But once he and his dad talk to attorneys, suddenly it’s a free speech issue. He now says that it was an “experiment in exercising his free speech”. He says he was “testing the boundaries of his free expression.”
Horse manure!
That punk clearly came up with that story after he got in trouble and needed a lawyer. It was never about free speech, it was about a stoner who thought he’d be funny.
The disciplinary action taken by the Principal was backed by the Superintendent, the School Board, the City Counsel, the Attorney General, and the District Court. Then it was reversed by the 9nth, and let’s hope the Supreme Court restores common sense by reversing the 9nth’s ruling.
We should have a ruling in a couple weeks I assume. I’ll be watching for it. Meanwhile, the kid and his dad ran off to China to live and work. I’d like to see an “experiment in exercising free speech” done there! But you know he doesn’t have the kahonas.

| Court Dumps D.C.'s Gun Ban! |
| 03.10.07 (9:15 am) [edit] |
|
Finally, an Appeals Court interpretation of the Constitution that I can agree with. In a landmark ruling, a Federal Appeals Court struck down the District of Columbia’s ban on handgun ownership. Gun control advocates are livid and now are shouting “judicial activism at its worst”. The Court’s opinion was that the wording of the Second Amendment guaranteed a citizen’s right to keep and bear arms, and not just a militia’s right.
Of course the liberals have their panties in a bunch. The mayor of D.C., Adrian Fently, vowed to pursue the decision all the way to the Supreme Court. Members of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Handgun Violence are appalled. The cities of Chicago and San Francisco are watching the case fervently. And strangely enough, the mainstream media has not reported the story nationally.
Naturally it’s gone unreported. The liberals don’t want us to be able to protect ourselves. They don’t think a criminal who breaks into your home is bad, just a little miss-guided. Never mind if he’s high on crack, it’s not his fault and we shouldn’t blame him. Remember, when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.
The Court went on to say that despite their ruling, the amendment was still subject to “reasonable restrictions” such as gun registrations or ownership limits. But D.C. cannot ban ALL handguns for ALL citizens.
The Supreme Court hasn’t ruled on a second amendment case in decades, and law experts feel this case stands a good chance of making it to the court.
Back to the example of the gay muslim crack head who breaks into my home, I’m locked and loaded buster. So are my two neighbors. We all agree to shoot first and sort out the second amendment issues later, after your funeral.
Remember; in Alaska you can still conceal carry without any permit.
Later.

| Liberal Bomb Throwing |
| 03.05.07 (1:13 pm) [edit] |
|
The Sunday edition of the Anchorage Daily News included the usual commentary by Beth Bragg. In her article she called me and others a bigot. I have been called worse, but her accusation touched a nerve.
Following is a segment of her article:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Intolerance in Alaska prompts a gay couple's departure
BETH BRAGG
COMMENT
(Published: March 4, 2007)
Alaska's many bigots will be thrilled to learn they've helped chase a gay couple out of the country.
They'll hear that the Anchorage men whose love story inspired a constitutional amendment legalizing discrimination in Alaska have moved to England, and they'll shout good riddance.
They'll congratulate themselves for the role they played in making Jay Brause and Gene Dugan look beyond America in their pursuit of the personal freedoms held so dearly by Americans.
If the bigots are lucky, the god to whom they pray will forgive them someday.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX X
The article went on and on about these poor gay men who want to be legally recognized the same as married people.
I must respond. This is the type of far left thinking that is constantly bombarding our lives at every level.
First, the God I pray to does not approve of a gay lifestyle.
Second, I’m not congratulating myself on their departure, but I certainly am not sorry to see them go.
Third, I do not approve of the homosexual lifestyle. I believe it is a moral question. I also do not approve of polygamy, nor do I want the state to offer benefits to polygamists. It’s not like I’m saying I don’t approve of the color of your skin!
Miss Bragg continues in her article to say the fear that gay benefits would “rock the earth off it’s axis” and that marriage should be kept sacred for people like Britney Spears.
She is a colorful writer, but those statements are ludicrous. The will of Alaskans is that marriage should be strictly between one man and one woman. Furthermore, outside of that traditional union, benefits shall not be offered. Pointing to cases where traditional marriage has failed is also a poor argument.
Miss Bragg, I want to be clear, homosexuality is an immoral lifestyle that I do not support. Traditional Americans do not support it either. By your writing, all traditional Americans are bigots. You even mentioned that it was only two years ago that England changed their laws to recognize gay unions. So I assume, by your reasoning, that until two years ago, the citizens of England were also bigots!
You are free to rationalize immoral behavior all you like, but tossing verbal grenades at traditionalists is not good policy.
You may be costing hard working Americans their livelihood, as I and others will be canceling our newspaper subscription.

| Best Record in WCC |
| 02.28.07 (7:42 am) [edit] |
|
In a surprising two game finish in league play, the Gonzaga Bulldogs won another West Coast Conference title (pending the tourney). They have won or shared the title the last eight years in a row.
On Saturday morning Feb 24th, the Bulldogs (9-3) were in second place to Santa Clara (10-2) with only two games remaining. Later that day the Bulldogs played the San Francisco Dons and needed one OT period to beat them. Meanwhile, Loyola Maramount was helping the Zag effort by knocking off the Broncos. Thus leaving both teams tied at 10-3 and one game remaining for each.
Jump to Monday Feb 26th. The Bulldogs beat San Diego on the road (a game that was not televised, damn it). Meanwhile, the Broncos of Santa Clara played Pepperdine who is in last place in the WCC. Believe it or not, Pepperdine knocked off the Broncos (10-4) in one overtime, handing the league title (pending) to Gonzaga (11-3).
With the league title and 21 wins overall, I think that will be enough for an invite to the NCAA Bracket for Gonzaga.
The Zags sure could use the services of center Josh Hytevelt, but that’s not happening. It’s too bad he decided his personal drug use was more important than his commitment to the team, thus getting his ass kicked off the roster. Hopefully he will learn something from this mess. Meanwhile, the Zags are lacking talent in the paint, which will translate into an early NCAA exit.
The WCC Tournament will actually crown the conference champ, but at least the Zags will have the highest seed. Let's see if they can hold 'em off another week.
But record wise, the Zags are the Champs.

| Gay Bashing |
| 02.26.07 (10:00 am) [edit] |
|
It's an ugly term, and usually is derived from prejudice. Although, I have never been accused of gay bashing, I have been termed homophobic. What is that supposed to mean anyway? The person who called me that doesn't even know me. They merely read an opinion I wrote about gay partner benefits, and how I say it's bullshit. So, because I'm against taxpayer money funding benefits for a behavior I abhore, I am homophobic? (I'm also against welfare to women who have five children from five different men)
I'll say it again for the umpteenth time, whatever john and fred do behind closed doors is none of my business. It's sick, discusting, and dimented, but still none of my business. What IS my business is how my tax dollars are spent by the feds and the states. I don't believe my tax dollars should go to fund fred's medical bills because he is a sex partner of a state or federal employee (in this case) named john.
Any man who seeks sexual relations with another man is just as sick as one who seeks relations with a small boy, a small girl, or a sheep. I think that because society has evolved to a more accepting stance is both wrong and misguided.
If you have other opinions about this subject...so be it. We still live in a free society. You have the Right to be wrong!
I am not one that promotes gay bashing, black bashing, woman bashing, or any bashing. Although, it's hard to resist liberal bashing and Muslim bashing. But let's not go there.
I don't wear my gay opinions on my sleeve, but if you ask me I will tell you. I don't feel there should be discrimination towards a behavior, nor should the behavior be recognized for specific Rights.
This is not a race, there are not cities or countries of gays that immigrated to America. Hell, it's not a gay gene you got from your mother's side of the family. It's a behavior!
And behaviors should not be glorified or recognized as a unique group in terms of benefits or marital status.

| Freakin' Gay Unions |
| 02.23.07 (8:19 am) [edit] |
|
According to reports, New Jersey is now allowing Gay Unions as an alternative to Gay Marriage. The unions will also qualify the significant other to receive the same benefits as a heterosexual couple currently enjoy. Well, isn’t that just perfect?
While most liberals and women agree that this is the type of legislation needed to avoid discrimination, I have a very different opinion on the subject. But before I can state it clearly, I must define homosexuality the way us old school men see it.
I believe homosexuality is a behavior, not something a person is born with. You show me a male animal like a dog, moose or chimp that would choose another male animal to procreate with (or attempt to) over a female.
You show me scientific evidence, like DNA, that singles out the “gay gene”. It doesn’t exist. And if it ever does, I will certainly re-think my position. But clearly, being gay is a behavior, not a physical attribute.
And, I might add, a deviant behavior.
Therefore, by allowing the legal union of two people with gay behavior is akin to recognizing behavior like pedophilia, sadism, serial killing, bestiality, or having six wives. None of these BEHAVIORS is recognized, nor given the same rights as a married heterosexual couple.
Leave it to the idiots on the east coast to start embracing deviant behavior and even reward it with legal rights.
Look, I’m never gonna be accused of being “progressive”, and what two brokeback boys do behind closed doors is not my business. But when we start legally recognizing and accepting that behavior, that’s where I draw the line.
Call me a homophobe, call me discriminatory, call me an “old bull”, but please, if you prefer your own sex….don’t call me!
Thank God that Alaska is as far away from New Jersey as I can possibly be (except maybe Hawaii).

| Super Sunday |
| 02.04.07 (9:30 am) [edit] |
|
Today is Super Bowl Sunday! To football fans it is both the best sunday of the year, and the worst. All season long the teams of the NFL battle to make it to today's World Championship game. It is the culmination of six months of physical and mental training. And let there be no doubt, today's winner will be the champion of the whole world. No other nation could possibly compete with our boys. Could you imagine an Islamic team? Hahahahaha!
Today is also the darkest sunday of the year. When the clock reaches quadruple zeros, the season is OVER! And fans all over the world have to endure six months of NO FOOTBALL. Oh sure, there is NASCAR to help tied us over, but please. The rules of NASCAR are ridiculous. Until they limit owners to just one car, and until they emphasize winning in the points race, NASCAR is just something playing on the tube in the background.
True football fans must suffer through withdrawals the best they know how. They have six months to re-aquaint themselves with there children. Six months to go back to church. Six months to get the "ol' lady" a vacation. Or whatever it takes to make sure come August, their sundays are free again.
This year I'm trying something new. I have season tickets to the Alaska Wild. The season starts in April and finishes in July. They are the newest member of the Intense Football League. It is arena football that is a notch or two below the Arena league you see on tv. They only have six home games plus the playoffs (if they get there), but we'll see how it goes. I'm sure I'll be reporting on it right here.
So enjoy the game but try to prepare yourself for the nasty void that will soon overcome you. One last thing, who the hell signed "Prince" to do the halftime show? Why can't they get some classic rock band? I guess it's gonna be a good bathroom break.
My prediction....Colts 37, Bears 23.

| Dem's Colors |
| 01.27.07 (8:54 pm) [edit] |
|
Barely a few weeks have passed since Nancy Pelosi was voted Speaker of the House, and already the Democrat’s true colors are starting to show. Remember her speech in which she announced a more collaborative and non-partisan approach to handling the nation’s issues? A new leadership with intentions of reaching across party lines and building consensus to move the Government forward in a positive atmosphere.
Horse pucky!
They have succeeded in ramming their agenda down the throats of conservatives. Their so called ‘100 hour agenda’ has produced six new bills. From raising taxes for oil companies to stem cell research and increasing cargo inspections to raising the minimum wage, they really think they are accomplishing a lot. I’m not arguing the min wage increase. It hasn’t been addressed in ten years. But why did a huge corporation in Samoa get an exemption from that? Is it because they are represented by Queen Pelosi herself? Gee, I wonder.
So they beat their chests and show off these impressive ‘100 hour’ accomplishments, like American citizens should be impressed. Remember, the President can still veto some or all of them.
Why don’t they work on something that is important? When are they going to fix the Social Security problems? When are they going to address frivolous lawsuits? What about our country’s borders? How about dissolving the United Nations? Why do these Democrats and their friends who call themselves Republicans pass these puny little senseless bills and ignore the nation’s REAL problems?
So called Republicans like Representatives Snowe (Maine) and Hagel (Nebraska), along with Senators Smith (Oregon) and Collins (Maine), are a disgrace to us real conservatives.
I mean stem cell research? Give me a friggin’ break. This ‘old bull’ is not impressed. Oh, and add a liberal president in ’08, much less a woman, and I’m gonna have to move to another country. Maybe New Zealand or Australia, do they like old bulls down there? I guess I better start doing some research.

| Healthcare for Gay Couples? |
| 12.20.06 (9:22 am) [edit] |
|
The Alaska Supreme Court ordered the state to comply with a lower court's ruling and offer same sex couples health benefits. That means, no extension to hammer out the details and/or policy for determining who is and isn't an actual 'couple'. Yeah, if I ever lose my job and health benefits, I could just 'shack' up with one of my state worker buddies and pretend we're a couple. In fact, any live in roomate of a state worker will enjoy full health benefits starting Jan 1. The same health benefits that were once sacred to married couples and their families.
I don't particularly object to same sex health coverage in corporate America. Private industry has the right to implement any policy they want, married or not. I do object to Judges overriding the will of the taxpayers and voters in matters that are NOT discriminatory. As a taxpayer and voter, I do not want my tax dollars being spent on healthcare for a segment of society seperated only by behavior, and a dubious behavior at that.
Sexual behavior should not be the qualifier for any kind of right. There is a very good reason that gays cannot marry in Alaska. Society does not approve! They have voted loud and clear that just because two guys like to take it from behind, that behavior does not qualify them to marry and copy a moral and publicly accepted family arraingement.
A behavior should not garner any special rights. No special rights in the workforce or housing or politics or especially marriage. Rather, I submit that cornholers actually have behavior problems. The act is not natural, but is a dimented and loathesome act that indicates real psychological problems. Maybe momma nurtured him a little too much, who knows? But even taking the religious and traditional elements out of the argument, it's not natural. I have never seen a male animal of any kind take it in the ass from another male. Nor have I seen two male animals carry on like they are a couple and try to nurture their young (who they woud have had to get from yet another couple of animals).
Reminds me of the 'bear joke' where the bear finally asked the failed hunter "it's not just the hunt you keep coming back for, is it?"
In summary, what happens in someone's bedroom is none of my business. But when it comes to spending my tax dollars, I think I should have a say. And my say is that I do not condone same sex couples, nor do I want to pay for their health benefits! The court is ramming it down my throat (no pun intended) and saying I must pay. Maybe our new Governor will persue this to the 9nth Circuit. Of course those liberals will probably support the gays as well. I guess it's referendum time again.

| Sarah's Slip |
| 10.18.06 (9:33 pm) [edit] |
|
Anyone watching the news this week probably saw the clip of Sarah Palin speaking to the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce, and her slip. She mentioned that they would have an advocate in Juneau, and if she was labeled as bias towards the Valley, "so be it, because I am".
Now the Knowles and Halcro camps are attacking her on that statement, as well as some talk shows like the "Dan Fagan Show".
I think that Sarah was merely preaching to the choir and didn't choose her words well. The liberals are trying to suggest that she would not represent all Alaskan communities on an even keel, and would favor the Valley.
These are merely last ditch attempts to erode some of the double digit lead she has over her opponents.
As for Fagan, he is a mouth piece for the oil companies. Though he does not admit it, my bet is that he is on their payroll. He talks about BP, Exxon, and Conoco Phillips like anyone else talks about their favorite old high school teacher. "I didn't always like ol' Mr. Smith, but I never would have succeeded in life if it weren't for him".
I think that "big oil" wants to see Tony Knowles become Governor, and not Palin. They are using mouths like Fagan and Kerry Kerrigan to sabatoge Palins chances of winning the office. I for one think it's a feable attempt that most Alaskan voters will not fall for.
I have never voted woman to an executive position like Governor, so Sarah, please don't do me wrong!

| F+ is Passing Grade |
| 03.17.06 (11:11 am) [edit] |
|
The following was printed in the editorial pages of the Anchorage Daily Newspaper. it is not my writing, but I found it entertaining enough to repeat it here. I'm lucky enough to live in Alaska and enjoy my gun rights to the fullest degree. But I see that Montana and Wyoming enjoy their freedoms as well. Congrats to those states. Again, this is copied and not my original (the pistol is mine however). Hooray! We got an F+ The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has issued its 2005 state-by-state report card on the success of its gun-grabbing agenda. Alaska received an F+, dropping from a D -. Across the nation, 32 states received D’s or F’s on the report card. Thirty-two. Why did Alaska fare so “poorly”, according to the anti-gunners? Thankfully, there were many reasons. Among them: Law-abiding folks can carry concealed weapons here; the state allows private sales without government interference; Alaska does not limit handgun sales to one a month; and, we do not allow police to arbitrarily limit concealed carry. And on and on and on. The group also reports that from “2004 to 2005, only four states changed their ‘grade’ — and three of those grade changes were demotions.” Florida dropped from a D to an F+ because it adopted a law allowing self-defense without retreat. We have only one thing to say to Alaska lawmakers and those in the other states who have turned their backs on this group’s shrill and misguided anti-Second Amendment message: Keep up the good work. Remember, with diligent effort, we could work our way down to an F, as have Montana and Wyoming.

& nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; & nbsp; &n bsp; &nb sp; &nbs p;   ; Boy, it’s been unseasonably warm. I’d say its almost 40 degrees. You talk about having a “riding itch”, and I just can’t scratch. But today is a fine day to fire my star up and also install my saddlebags. I flung open the g-door and the sun was beaming right into the garage. The star fired up on the first touch. Excellent! I went through the usual routine; let her run for about ten minutes while I sipped on a “Tennessee coffee”. I then shut her down and moved her over by the workbench to let her cool off. Oh yeah, why’ll I had her running I called my college student daughter. As soon as she answered I held the phone near the exhaust and revved her a few times. I got a chuckle out of it, but my daughter did not. Oh well, she has a weird dad, and she knows it. OK, time for the new bags. First I removed the sissy bar, pillion, and driver seat. I tried removing the helmet lock, but it was too tight and I stopped before I stripped the screw. I’ll address that at a later date. Next, I bolted on the bag guards. They basically just have longer bolts to go through the sissy bar brackets as well. Then I thought, hey, I might as well adjust the mono shock while I’m at it. OK, take the snaps out of the mud guard and hang the igniter unit panel off to one side. You use the supplied tool for rotating the top of the shock around to the selected number setting. It’s actually an awkward angle to get your hand into, but once the tool was in place, a very simple adjustment. The settings can range from 1-7, with 1 being the softest. The factory setting is 3, but a big guy like me (and some gear) will probably do better at 5. If I was taking a trip with a passenger I’d probably move it to 7. Once the mud guard and igniter unit were back in place, I turned my attention back to the bags. After putting them where I liked them, and making sure they were even, I used zip ties to secure them to the guards. Now just reinstall the two seats and sissy bar, and “wa-lah” I’m finished. Basically, just a nice couple of hours of piddling in the garage. This is “therapy” to me and serves to keep me satisfied until spring allows me back on the road. Well, that’s it for this week. Next week I’ll attempt to jump the star over the neighbor’s minivan. Later.

| Al Gore,"I'm just messin' with ya". |
| 02.16.06 (8:37 am) [edit] |
|
That's what I wish Al Gore would say after a vicious, malicious attack on America through his speeches. You know, like a "Saturday Night Live" skit or something. He was funny on SNL, but he's not funny now. He comes off as a truly spiteful man still obsessed with the election he lost, and especially who he lost to. We are a free country, and the man can say whatever he wants to say, but I mean "really". Shouldn't he show even a miniscule streak of respect for America and it's leaders? Doesn't he have any loyalty for fellow countrymen in the world arena of political persona? I like the article that Kathleen Parker wrote today. She, as usual, has nailed it on the head. I'll paste a few lines of it next. It appeared nationally, but I read it in the "Orlando Sentinel" newspaper. No one wants this world we've inherited from the terrorists, least of all Americans who don't relish endless security checks. Nor does anyone want innocent people detained or denied access to a nation that welcomes all.
Were I an Arab-American detained for no good reason and denied my civil rights because of my ethnicity, I'd be furious. I'd raise Cain, write op-eds and maybe even file a lawsuit. And then, very quietly, I'd thank Allah that I live in the U.S., where such protests are encouraged and where a citizen can sue his own government.
However much we might wish otherwise, we're locked into this defensive mode for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, everyone is entitled to think and say what he pleases. The same free speech that permits dissent -- and controversial cartoons -- also allows fools to out themselves.
Surely even the Saudis see the true picture -- that Al Gore is a bitter politician who, sadly, seems to be one slice short of a loaf these days. You should really check out the whole article, she is a good read. Just go to www.orlandosentinel.com . That was my cheap endorsement to avoid copyright infringements. OK, just joking. Hey did you see who North Texas A&M hired as an assistant football coach? Take a wild guess. Ryan Leaf. That's right, the four year wonder who "stole" millions from the San Diego Chargers and retired! Freakin' retired! I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure that SD expected SOMETHING for their huge investment. Remember, he was chosen #2. Peyton Manning (#1) is still in the league and on his way to a "Hall of Fame" career. Leaf will be the QB coach and Assistant Head coach. I wonder what he brings to the table other than "early retirement strategie s"? Until next time, see ya.

| VP Hitman? |
| 02.13.06 (2:20 pm) [edit] |
|
Wow! Did the democrats jump on this one. Vice President Chaney had a hunting accident and didn't hold an immediate press conference. The Whitehouse is obviously trying to cover it up. That's it, they quit using the CIA and instead are asking the VP to do the dirty work. I think the strategy is for President Bush to invite North Korea's Pyongyang and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on a hunting trip. Then he falls ill the night before and asks Chaney to fill in for him. Genius!
I suppose this story falls right into the lap of anti-gun ativists as well. If th VP can have an accident like this in a controlled enviroment, how dangerous is it for us laymen? It's a wonder more deaths aren't attributed to bird hunting. Thank God that here in Alaska anti-gun activists are extremely outnumbered and generally keep to themselves. And we are lobbying the state legislator to ban anti-gun activists from establishing residency in our state.
OK, I was joking, but there is a law before the state senate that would give Alaskans the right to shoot anyone that threatens their life. It would also protect the citizen from criminal prosecution. We're taalkin' "old west" mentality here. Now, I'm all for our Constitutional right to bear arms, but I see one little flaw in this bill. Criminals will now be able to shoot each other under the same protection of "fear for their life". Think about it, gangster A meets gangster B, both carrying heat, both scared for their lives, whoever is left standing is exconerated? I sure hope they tweak the bill's wording some before they vote on it. I'll keep you posted. Until next time...

By: MATT VOLZ - Associated Press JUNEAU, Alaska -- Alaska lawmakers are considering expanding a state law so a person could use deadly force to protect themselves not just at home but anywhere in the state.
The bill, sponsored by Republican state Sen. Gene Therriault from North Pole, drew the support of the National Rifle Association during a hearing Thursday before a legislative committee. "If you're walking down the street and a rapist tries to drag you into an alley, or if you're walking through a parking lot and a kidnapper tries to drag you into his van, you do not have to retreat," said Brian Judy of the NRA. "You can choose to stand your ground and fight with force."
Sen. Gretchen Guess, a Democrat from Anchorage, wondered if she would be held liable if somebody shot at her at a mall and she fired back. The answer was no.
"You can't take out your gun and shoot wildly into the crowd," Therriault said. "If, in fact, you took out the aggressor, you would be exempt from prosecution."
Deputy Attorney General Susan Parks said the state supports the concept of the bill, but it could make it more difficult to prosecute gang members, drug dealers and other criminals from prosecution if they claim self-defense in a shooting death.
"Our concern here is that this also going to protect the bad guys, because they are going to say, 'I had a right to protect myself,' even if they're up to no good," Parks said.
Parks also noted the families of innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of a self-defense shooting may have no recourse.

| Battle of the Beards |

Well, it was a battle for a quarter. Then the young Mr. Roetlisberger pulled his team away and never looked back. Boy, did I blow that prediction? And I had thought that Jake the snake had finally found his groove. Probably should have shaved. My NFL predictions have really sucked this year! If anyone is wagering based on my predictions... you are dumber than dirt! Of course, on the other hand, if you are betting against all of my picks, you are having a pretty good year!
But hey, my picks follow the same guidelines as my stock market advice. I've always had a knack for buying high and selling low. I've never quite learned how to make that profiable, but oh well.
My final NFL prediction of the year is for the Super Bowl. And here it is:
Seattle 24 - Pittsburgh 17
I know, I know, you're thinking "dude, the superbowl is always a high scoring affair. It will be like 42-36 or something."
That's a valid point, but not this year. Both teams lean heavily on their running games, and both teams have terrific defenses. Just do the math, it's gonna be low scoring. The 'hawks will be cautious in the beginning, and Big Ben is known for not taking chances. I'm sticking to my prediction. Ad I can't wait to buy me a "world champs - seattle seahawks" t-shirt. Never thought I'd see the day.
But hey, congratulations to both organizations. Both coaches lead their teams with class. Both teams deserve to be there. I think the nation will enjoy a hard fought and clean game.
The only sad part of the superbowl is it signals the end of another season. Nothing but baseball or nascar to fill the void for a few months.
Go Seahawks!
Until next time, see ya.

| NFL Predictions |

1/16/2006
O.K., its Martin Luther King day, here’s to all you federal employees who get the day off!
Forgive my surly tone, for I am still in shock over the outcome of all the NFL playoff games. I guess I have finally lost all touch with reality when it come to the talent level of various teams. Take Denver for example. They haven’t won a playoff game in six or seven years. Yet, they beat the defending world champions like Tony Stewart whooping on Jeff Gordon!
Ok, how about the Steelers? What have they accomplished this year other than sqeaking into the playoffs as a wild card? I’ll tell ya, they demoralized the Colt offense so bad that it looked like Eli was wearing Peyton’s uniform.
All in all I stand at 2-6 out of the eight game predictions I made. The first round Patriot win, and the second round Seahawk win are the only games I got right.
So, I really shouldn’t be making any more predictions until I do more research and win back some credibility. I mean, who is gonna read my predictions and have any faith in them? Only some fool who is more out of touch than me would even read my column anyway. Well…..I see you are still reading. All right then. For you total losers (but faithful readers) here are my picks.
Carolina is the one team that Seattle did not want to face. They have a great defense and their offense and special teams are unpredictable. They are also pretty streaky. That is they get on both hot streaks and cold streaks, sometimes in back to back series. Seattle does enjoy the home field advantage, which they hope to exploit more than the Bears did. I think this will be a nail biter and come down to who has the ball last, Seattle 38, Carolina 31.
The hungry Steelers travel to Denver for a mile high confrontation. I’ve only seen Denver play once this year, and it wasn’t pretty. Mike Anderson still impresses me for a guy that never played college ball. And Jake the snake may finally live up to his billing, with the best pass protection he’s ever played behind. But I’m still shaking my head over those Steelers. They seem to be rejuvenated somehow. Big Ben Roethlisberger is on his game and in tune with Ward and Randel El. Duece Staley is again a complete “no show” this season. However, Jerome is back to form, and they found a diamond in the rough with that Parker kid.
Both Denver and Pittsburgh almost choked their respective games in the fourth quarter, but I got to go with Denver. Home field advantage and a mature Jake Plummer give them a slight edge in my book. Denver 27, Pittsburgh 17.
Well, those are my picks. I’m sure that you have to agree with me. After all, if you are still reading this you have less clue than me.
Hey, don’t beat yourself up. Someboby’s got to read this stuff!
Until next time, see ya.

| Hillary Go Home! |
| 08.23.05 (6:27 am) [edit] |
|

(Published: August 23, 2005)
Sens. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and two others toured part of Alaska last week to see evidence that global warming is real and an approaching crisis.
Did they find any? They saw glaciers receding, villages threatened by bank erosion and thawing permafrost. The only problem for their claims of proof is that those things have been going on for years, in some cases for centuries.
You don't have to take our word for it — just read the guest column on this half-page by Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu, director of the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is one of the world's most respected Arctic scientists.
Take special note of his statement that Alaska's glaciers have been receding at least since 1800, well before the start of global warming. See also his note that the permafrost is a relic of the Ice Age and has been thawing for centuries.
Dr. Akasofu mentions that coastal erosion in Alaska and elsewhere results from storms generated over open water. The open water has numerous causes, including cyclical changes in ocean currents. "It cannot be concluded that this is a result of the greenhouse effect," he states.
The scientist did not discuss another point well known to other researchers, that erosion problems have plagued villages for more than a century. They began when missionaries came to Alaska and built schools. At that point the villagers ended their nomadic travel from winter hunting camps to fishing camps in summer.
The Native peoples settled close to the schools so their children could attend. Many built homes along the shore to be near their food sources and commuted to hunting grounds. The soils available along ocean and river banks tended to be poor and highly susceptible to erosion. But when a caving bank came close to a building, most structures could be moved beyond erosion's reach. Others could be rebuilt without great cost.
In modern times, homes and community buildings became far more substantial and some were tied into utilities. Moving them is a problem far greater than in years past. And increasing erosion multiplies the number of villages threatened.
So Hillary Clinton and John McCain found what they were looking for. About global warming, Clinton told reporters, "I don't think there is any doubt left for anyone who actually looks at the science."
Like other true believers, the two claimed that most scientists are convinced that global warming is caused in large measure by human activities. That boast rings a lot like the old advertising slogan, "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette."
Certainly some scientists have stampeded into the global warming camp. But — you should pardon the expression — cooler heads are skeptical.
The preceeding editorial appeared in the opinion column of the Anchorage Daily News. Whether you agree or disagree with global warming, I thought it was worth repeating. Mainly because I wanted to say to John McCain and Hillary Clinton "would you just worry about your own states?"
"McCain, your state is allowing illegals into the country, and Clinton, your state has some of the highest taxes in the country. I wish you two would worry about your own states and stay the hell out of Alaska."
"Don't come back!"
"Don't pretend to have all the answers for other states when your own states are in such disarray."
